AGUSTIN CARDENAS (Matanzas, Cuba, 1927-2001). Painter and sculptor. Studied at San Alejandro Schoolof Havana. He subsequently joined Grupo de los 11, the driving force behind Cuba’s new vanguard movement. He presents his first one-man exhibition at Palacio de Bellas Artes of Havana after receiving the National Prize for Sculpture in 1954. That same year he travels to Paris and befriends the gallery owner Dennise René. André Breton welcomed him into the Surrealist group and writes an essay about his work. Agustín Cárdenas is considered as one of the major sculptors of the 20th century.
